Landing of submarine cables.
July 18th, 2005 Marseille
Louis Dreyfus Armateurs and his Alcatel partner inaugurate in Marseille Prado beach the landing of the international submarine cables: SeaMeWe4 and MedCable. The ceremony will be hosted by the Marseille’s City Hall, represented by Mr Renaud Muselier, in presence of the two cables operators : France Telecom and Orascom.
The cable network named SeaMeWe4 has been layed on over 20 000 km to connect Marseille to Singapor via North Africa, Egypt, India, Pakistan, Thailand and Malaysia. Thanks to the MedCable network, Marseille is connected to Algeria and future extensions might be set to Morocco.
LD Travocean, subsidiary of Louis Dreyfus Armateurs, specialized in the laying and burial of submarine cables, operates in cooperation with Alda Marine, a joint venture of Alcatel and Louis Dreyfus Armateurs which owns the cable vessel “Ile de Sein”. This vessel buries the cable in the open sea while LD Travocean lands it on the Prado beach. This sensitive operation comprises the laying and the protection of the submarine cables from the vessel to the beach.
The Provence-Alpes Côte d’Azur has just been elected as a world-wide competitiveness region in the field of telecommunication. This operation proves the dynamism of Marseille and its will to invest in the new technologies. These two submarine cables thus allow Marseille to be the hub of a very modern information system.
