City of Hamburg naming ceremony
City of Hamburg, designed and operated by Louis Dreyfus Armateurs in partnership with Leif Hoegh, was named on the 11th of June by Mrs. Valérie Pécresse, French Minister for Higher Education and Research, at ST Marine shipyard in Singapore.
Two years after beginning operations with ro-ro vessel Ville de Bordeaux, Airbus entrusted Louis Dreyfus Armateurs (LDA) and Leif Hoegh (LHC) with the conception and operation, under a twenty-year contract, of two additional vessels designed to carry aircraft components, in particular of the A380.
City of Hamburg is the first achievement of the partnership created two years ago between LDA and ST Marine. It will continue with the delivery of a sister ship, Ciudad de Cadiz beginning 2009 and with the delivery, in 2011, of a RoPax vessel dedicated to LDA’s English Channel lines.
Mr Chang Cheow Teck, President of ST Marine considers “City of Hamburg as a major stride in the partnership of LDA and LHC with ST Marine. We are proud to be linked to both companies, esteemed forces in the shipping community. I am confident that the resolute commitment by the various project teams which has brought this newbuilding programme thus far, will similarly keep us on course to achieve the remaining milestones for this project”.
Philippe Louis-Dreyfus, President of LDA praises “the spirit of cooperation that has animated – and will animate for the ships to come - teams from ST Marine, Leif Hoegh, Airbus and LDA. This cooperation is a fantastic example of what shipping activities depend on today : team spirit and international cooperation”.
City of Hamburg will thus be the second RoRo used for transporting elements of the A380. She will be delivered in the third quarter of 2008. Fitted with a crew of 17 (including 6 French officers), the vessel will be registered under the French RIF (International French Registry) flag. It is equipped with powerful stabilizers and dehumidifiers to ensure a safe sea transportation to the aircraft elements.
Indeed, production sites for the A380 are distributed across Europe. The center and aft parts of the fuselage are built in Hamburg, the wings in Mostyn (Wales), the tail in Cadiz and the nose in Saint-Nazaire. Connections between these various sites are ensured by LDA and LHC logistic chain.
Louis
Dreyfus Armateurs is pleased with this further step in their relationship with Airbus. This partnership highlights the
experience and know-how of LDA crews and onshore teams. In an international context
where economic and industrial development has to reconcile with respect for the
environment, Louis Dreyfus Armateurs
vessels stand-out in providing innovative and efficient solutions.
